Pros
Some of the younger, newer staff were very kind.
Cons
In my experience as an employee here, USGBC was a case study in how to burn out committed, passionate people. There was effectively no onboarding or preparation, with management absent, cold, and out of reach. Workload expectations escalated almost immediately while day-to-day guidance and travel resources did not.
This organization systemically undermines and mistreats its staff. Work is routinely derailed by layers of approval gatekeeping and eleventh-hour rewrites, producing a horrid culture of optics over outcomes. The performance review system is not only inconsistent but extremely tainted; criteria shift after the fact, feedback is inconsistent if not non-existent, and performance management functions more as paperwork than support. Psychological safety is absent; asking for clarification or help invites shame and blame. I watched capable colleagues burn out or leave without a job lined up due to the corrosive environment created by management.
Working here felt like sustainability theater; decisions were brand-first, impact second causing high-impact sustainable solutions to take a back seat to revenue and pushing products. USGBC is an HR-run dehumanizing corporate machine that will suffocate your passion, your confidence, and your stamina. I wouldn’t recommend this employer to anybody, on any basis. Behind the green branding is a hollow workplace that burns through good people and calls the wreckage “process”. Please do not support them.
