Pros

Good health benefits and a pension. Most have great work-life balance.

Cons

The Criminal Investigation unit of the IRS = poorly run agency, terrible leadership, toxic work environment, a lot of favoritism, easy for incompetent people to rise up the ranks if they play the right games. It is a frustrating place to work if you're a high-achiever, but a great place to work if you'd like to do as little as possible and get away with it and don't care about growth/learning.

Pros

Very good coworkers who help each other out and care about the mission.

Cons

I left because the stability and benefits of this position came into question with recent changes. I had a great 4 years working for the IRS until the end. I would have stayed for 30 years but realized that once the stability was gone there was no reason for me to stick around. Federal positions are very niche and it is difficult to transfer the skills outside of the federal government. So, I decided to leave now and start a new career before I was 10 years in, only to get fired and not have career prospects.
