Pros
I have worked as a FileMaker Developer with eXcelisys for a little over a year and have found it to be a lucrative and enjoyable place to work. The pay rate and quantity of work has been great. It seems to be a real meritocracy, where good work is rewarded with more work. Being a contract worker allows you complete flexibility in your hours, which can be a good/bad thing. You need to be a self driven person to succeed. Everyone at the company is highly skilled at what they do and are always available to help with any questions. If you post a question in the FileMaker thread, on Slack, you will get a response from 3 or more people in a few minutes. Developers work with project managers who will take care of the client so you can focus on what you do best, development. For everyone working remotely , there is a very close synergy within the company. The owner does a great job of instilling company pride. I haven’t experienced any politics or even negativity been employees. There is a ton of cliental and many many different kinds of projects. You can get anything from 5 - 200+ hour projects from any kind of industry. Due to their unique pay structure, nobody gets paid unless you are billing hours. So as long as you are billing hours and the customers are happy everyone is happy. The owner does pay offer benefits such as: paying for Dev Con (including hotel), FileMaker Certification costs, spiffs for positive reviews from customers, spiffs for writing tips-and-trick articles. The owner also pays for a weekend trip in Indianapolis for the entire company every 2 years or so.
Cons
Since you are a contract worker there are no benefits such as health insurance. There isn’t too much feedback on how you are doing besides your work load. It seems to be a “No feedback is good feedback” review system.
